Today is the day. Don Corley’s hearing before the Alabama Board of Pardons & Paroles begins at 8:30AM. The verdict should be ready by 9AM. Please stay tuned and we will post the verdict here as soon as possible after it is read.
As always, thank you all for your prayers, support, and well-wishes.
Mike Hale, Sheriff of Jefferson County, Alabama, has written a letter to the Pardons & Parole Board asking they DENY parole to Don Corley! The reprint of the letter is below.
Alabama state law requires a 30 day written notice to all victims before their parole date. Ever wonder what that notice looks like? I’m attaching it below.
Notice that the language says “an open public meeting.” If you are anywhere close to Montgomery, Alabama on the morning of January 31st – why don’t you swing by? You’ve been so supportive so far, so we feel that our supporters are entitled to attend as well. I’ve been assured we are the first on the docket that morning, so you can attend and get to work just in time for that 10am meeting.
Location details:
301 S Ripley Street
Montgomery, AL 36130
Obviously it will be a bit emotional, so be prepared for that. Our supporters have been nothing but calm, rational and focused so far, and we expect nothing less on the day of the hearing. If you attend, please continue to represent 30is30 with pride. If the victims can do it, you can too.
I’d be honored to have your presence and support as we state our case to the Parole Board. You can’t speak at the hearing, only the victims can. But your presence is valued. We, as one united group, can say:
“30 years is 30 years, deny parole to Charles Donald Corley!”
The support that our cause has received continues to astound us! Luther Strange, Attorney General of Alabama, has written a letter opposing parole for Don Corley. His office has graciously allowed us to reprint the letter here on 30is30.com.
30is30 believes that, sometimes, bad people happen to good organizations. In this case Don Corley was an Assistant Scoutmaster for a local Homewood, AL Boy Scout Troop for many years, and used the opportunity as a way to identify new victims for him to molest. It is a shame that the reputation of a solid organization like the Boy Scouts of America was tarnished by Don Corley’s independent acts of molestation, and that he used his troop in Homewood as a feeding ground.
The BSA did their best in 1995, taking swift action by removing Don Corley and supporting both the local unit and the victims with resources helping them through a difficult time. They had a duty to help, and stepped up as soon as they knew of the issue.
The Boy Scouts of America have an unmatched capability to positively impact today’s youth. They are an organization founded on principles which must constantly work to adapt to the modern world while keeping a watchful eye on the safety of the boys enrolled. Today, they continue to take a stand for morality and justice by standing by ALL victims of Don Corley, issuing an unprecedented statement to the Alabama Pardons and Parole Board as well as the community of Birmingham Alabama and to those negatively impacted by Don Corley’s terrible legacy.
