30is30 believes that, sometimes, bad people happen to good organizations. In this case Don Corley was an Assistant Scoutmaster for a local Homewood, AL Boy Scout Troop for many years, and used the opportunity as a way to identify new victims for him to molest. It is a shame that the reputation of a solid organization like the Boy Scouts of America was tarnished by Don Corley’s independent acts of molestation, and that he used his troop in Homewood as a feeding ground.
The BSA did their best in 1995, taking swift action by removing Don Corley and supporting both the local unit and the victims with resources helping them through a difficult time. They had a duty to help, and stepped up as soon as they knew of the issue.
The Boy Scouts of America have an unmatched capability to positively impact today’s youth. They are an organization founded on principles which must constantly work to adapt to the modern world while keeping a watchful eye on the safety of the boys enrolled. Today, they continue to take a stand for morality and justice by standing by ALL victims of Don Corley, issuing an unprecedented statement to the Alabama Pardons and Parole Board as well as the community of Birmingham Alabama and to those negatively impacted by Don Corley’s terrible legacy.
