We say on this website that “molestation” is not a four letter word, and we need to stop treating it that way. While the subject isn’t a pleasant topic, it’s a necessary one. A molester’s power stems from the silence of the victims.
When I describe this subject to people, sometimes I phrase it this way: Think of your house – maybe your basement or a less frequently used bathroom. Generally, when the lights are off a long time and we neglect the space … that’s where the bugs go and the dust collects. Once you turn on the light, increase the activity in that spot, you’ll find that it discourages the muck and filth from collecting there.
Let’s not keep the topic of molestation in the dark. If we are able to equip our children with the knowledge of the subject and stay in communication with them about their daily lives, the likelihood they will become a victim is dramatically reduced.
We have to talk about it. Just like we talk about traffic safety, being respectful to your elders and why it’s important to eat your peas. We educate our kids in other areas, we cannot neglect this subject.
I felt compelled to say this after feedback we received from a visitor to the site:
“After reading your website, I am still thinking about this and I had a talk with my daughter about it. I want you to know that in sharing your message with me today, you have pushed me to have a conversation that is long overdue and necessary. Thank you for that.”
… and the world just got a little brighter.

Leave a CommentKeeping the dialog open is critical… on both sides. If potential offenders were caught early enough, they might never offend. I think it’s critical to not only teach your children by talking to them, but also interacting in the adult world. We need to hold each other accountable in various communities (church, friend groups, schools, families, etc). If you see something that looks funny, it probably is. Best to approach people and ask the tough questions. With molestation, there are no sleeping dogs to let lie.

I just got an excellent Direct Message on Twitter:
“Molestation may not be a four letter word, but in this case, ‘free’ is.”
Very very true. In this situation, letting this man go free back into society is the only unacceptable resolution. If you agree, please help. Contribute your voice by submitting a letter. We also appreciate you sharing this with your connections.
Every signature, every petition, every voice counts.

Educating people about this is why I became a Darkness to Light facilitator. Talking about it is SO important – difficult, yes, but important. I’m glad you were able to tell people – it shows tremendous courage on your part.
